Damping of mechanical vibrations by shunt piezoelectric structural elements

539.3Abstract
Incorporation of piezoelectric elements into a structure opens new possibilities for adjusting and controlling the dynamic characteristics of the system. For practical implementation of the discussed variant it is offered to fix piezo-elements to the surface of the structure and to monitor its dynamic characteristics by adjusting the external shunt electric RLC-circuits. The dynamic characteristics of the system are defined in the framework of the variational formulation of the eigenvalue problem. The real part of the obtained complex frequencies represents the natural vibration frequency and the imaginary part corresponds to the damping coefficient. The produced damping effect is presented in a series of experiments, in which the external electrical circuits were used for passive damping of the longitudinal vibrations of a piezoceramic rod plated along half of its length.
