On the basis of the analysis of the causes, which invoke starting earthquakes or hidden defects, the fact of the existence of new, previously not described types of crackshave been identified. Griffith-Irwin cracks are characterized by the fact that their boundary is smooth. A new type of cracking has a piecewise smooth boundary. Both types of cracks can be constructed using homeomorphisms of areas containing cavities, boundaries of which converge. Properties of a new type of cracking are different from those of Griffith-Irwin cracksand can be detected by examining the corresponding block structure. A new type of cracking has not been studied thoroughly yet, due to the complexity of the constructions and the study of block structures, but the qualitative differences from Griffith-Irvine cracks, first of all in lower strength properties have been already revealed.
