Numerical modeling of global transport of resistant organic pollutants in the environment

Abstract

A numerical model of the global transport of resistant organic pollutants in the Northern hemisphere is considered by the example of lindane. The model includes a series of physical mechanisms responsible for the environmental evolution of these substances with consideration to their degradation in different media (atmosphere, water, soil). The model makes it possible to investigate spatial and temporal variations of resistant organic pollutants in the Northern hemisphere resulting from European-source emissions, and to calculate their monthly-mean percentile content and accumulation in different media, as well as the rate of their degradation. The numerical experiments were performed for a period of one year (1992), using the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) meteorological data.
