Abstract

It has been shown in the paper that the orientation of a crack during its formation may depend on the initial form of a previously formed defect. For the model of an astroid-form defect (e.g. pores in polycrystallin ceramics), it has been found out that under uniaxial compression of a plate the crack is oriented at an angle of 45 degrees to the line of the force action. Thus, the limiting curve of fracture has an ellipse form in the space of main stresses and represents the special case of a limiting curve obtained during formation of an ellipse-form defect.
